This is exactly why I do hip hop shows. You know, MC/B-Boy/DJ Battles. Nothing but real isssh is played at this events and people actually would boo you (and throw you out) if you played ANY jiggy shit. :)

I agree with nik, I'm a Mario fan as well. How can you go wrong with a line like: "You got the best looking jeans that I've ever seen so baby won't you shake it for me..." We all know he's not talking about jeans... I love it.

Also, don't be too quick to judge...often times when people talk about music that is "crap"...they're refering to songs that have just been overplayed, i.e. the "------- G-unit" stuff that Booster was refering to. If you had somehow managed to get a copy of the song "In Da Club" 6 months before it showed up on MTV, I'm sure you wouldn't have called it "crap" and I'm sure you would have told everybody how hot the song was going to become.

Word. I remember when I got a copy of that, and was telling my dj colleage about the hot new joint produced by dre, I played it at the party, my colleage was looking strangely at me, as well as the crowd. No rotation on MTV -> no dancing. Same has happened when I played "Addictive" from Truth Hurts, or... whatever. You know what I am talking about.

Same thing happened with me when I first started playing Snoop's "Beautiful." I heard it in California while back home on vacation. It wasn't being played on MTV but was getting airplay on the radio stations in the Bay Area. The song was ill so I started playing it on the east coast. Nobody would really dance to it...until six months later when Snoop finally made a video for it and played it on MTV. Then all of the east coast DJ's were playing that song. Unless you're a famous DJ with a great reputation, it's really difficult to get people to dance to new music if it hasn't been played on MTV. It's a shame that these "famous" DJ's are the ones that aren't technically sound like Funkmaster Flex. Has anyone ever listened to him on his mix shows? His juggling skills are booty! I can't believe he's a famous DJ with turntable skills that are that poor. I mean I'm not turntablist myself, but at least I can mix. I've never heard that fool blend anything and when he juggles, it's just way off beat. Now DJ Skribbles, there's a guy that can juggle on beat. Does he have any more hip hop mix cd's besides for that Traffic Jams cd? Such a shame that he spends so much time on house/trance music now.

House? Trance? Really? Yeah, that one Traffic Jam CD was dope, but that was... 95? Wow.

Even famous DJs have difficulties playing new stuff, I remember I've seen ... damned, now I cant remember his name anymore, it was one of the hot97 DJs, and you dont see them often here in Germany. But he played fresh and new songs (I though, cool to hear different music than usual) but the people were not interested til he played "old"/radio rotation stuff.

There are some cool songs out there are definitely not crap, but MOST of the stuff on radio is crap. Thank Payola for that one.

You basically have to train your crowd. You have to remember that they're listening to the same stuff over and over. Here's the key to get them to listen to new stuff.

1. INTRODUCE it on the mic as hot new shit.
2. MAKE SURE YOU TELL THEM, they're first ones to hear it... that makes them feel SPECIAL.
3. DON'T PLAY the whole thing. Play it a few times throughout the night.
4. Next week DO IT AGAIN... until they become familiar with it.

by the 3rd week, when you throw the same song, they'll stay on the dance floor and love you for it.

TRUST ME. It works. They key? REPETITION, REPETITION, REPETITION. That's how new music is served to them by radio. So, do the same at the club, just in smaller doses.

I'm an experienced radio, club, and everything else in between dj... I know what I'm talking about. lol

Sixxx is right.
Back in the day we had envouge "hold on" about 6 months before it hit. What sixxx describes above is exactly how we got people to dance to it. I did the same with O.P.P and of all things "can't trust it" Public enemey". I'm not saying it always works, remeber candyman. Think it took a couple of years to get people on that one. I'm gonna shut up know becasue I'm date'n myself.

TC, is that your DJ name? However, great music and mix! What do you mean with no eq? Did you mix it in internal mode?

Yes, that's my DJ Name. I used relative mode. I try to select my music so I don't have to use the individual channel EQ's to help make a mix sound cleaner. Until recently I didn't even own a mixer that had individual channel EQ's. When setting up a mix for a CD I try to get breaks, chord & bassline drops and changes to line up cleanly. Sooner or later I will have to learn the art of creative equalization. :)

That's why I never posted a setup pic until I got my 57. I was to embarassed to be a 20+ year vet still spinning on ancient equipment. But now that Johnny M is around I don't feel quite as ancient. :-)

Yes. I kid you not. I have used other mixers in some club environments, the most common being the Rane MP24z (never used the 44) & Urei 1620 (the old one). I had even older Numarks before that. The first mix I ever posted here I did on the MTX. =)

AMF Deeznotes and Dj NickPeters I feel have the best mixes up here. Reason I say this example. (NickPeters dropped tracks from he 80's and 90's hiphop where real music was. Deeznotes set is right up my street. Neosoul is will underrated and its music u can enjoy and will never die in a 48 hr span. AMF now u went to the breakin era Cosmic Car dude that is a killer track along side F4000 if u remember that track. Morph is my boy he has mixes that is always on point with me.

i was bored so i decided to practice....with gr8 difficulty i managed to record under proper volume becoz my recorded acts gay all the time...so if there r variations in the eq plz forgive me..only becoz i cnt increase it or decrease it by much...and I have jumped bpm towards the end..becoz i just wanted to mix tunes especially my best combos...soo building upto a bpm of 115+ wud take a lot of time from 100...and i wanted to keep this mix as short as possible...well its one hour though...so please consider my limitations to record and yes i agree few instances i could have kept the mix for longer...i didnt wanna mess up badly... and do all the recording again...becoz tht happnd almost in between...

you guys knw its hard to mix at home especially when there is no vibe or energy going on.neways i will post it...i will listen to ur comments and not say a word in return...so please chk it out!yes it true i dnt hve too much patience wen i mix at home...

ha ha, thanks man, again its live so there are ALOT of things that I would have gone back and changed if I could but I figure id post it anyway, im just stoked about my 57's abilities in recording, trust me, there will be alot more mixes to come. A few of those scratches were ok but the one where I scratched out funky little beat into bizzare love triangle sound like shit, not sure what I was doing there ha ha. Gotta keep practicing.

Ya I got a practice session from last night I recorded...Just random ish. I will post it up this evening.

Man there's some really nice track selection in here, but a couple of the segues are really abrupt and really didn't work...

So I'm taking it this was an on the fly mix, re: you just pulling what you felt like at the time? because just listening to it i can hear that with a couple of preset loop points and cue points this could have been soooo off the f*cking hizzle....

Sorry if i sound like i'm crtiquing for the sake of it, i love the mix I really do if i was in a club i'd be going ballistic and dancing like a maniac, some of the selection is f*cking brilliant, and I like your cuts nice chirps and really clean... but there was a couple of points there that mix could have just blown the f*ck up if you had set some loops or cue points and used the 57's effects.

Hope that comes across as helpful man, it's not meant in a bad way at all, I'll deffo be bumping this mix for a long time...

Thanks Monk and I agree 100%, yeah it was a live mix and I except for the outkast into the bodymovers I NEVER play any of the songs in the order they are on here, my live mixes are never pre-planned so sometimes they work and sometimes they dont.

Im still learning my 57 so some of the party where an echo should or could have been used I just scratched them out. Thats why my multi-tracked mixes are wayyy better but this was all in fun and shows people how I do it live because you can never tell really how good a person is by a multi-tracked mix in my opinion.

yeah I know what you mean mate, i haven't put a live mix up yet everything has been multitracked so far just because that's whats interested me most over the last couple of years....

having said that i'm just working out a live mix fully utilising SSL to it's full capacity and i'll be pleased if it's as good as this...

the thing with Multitrack mixes is i think it's more about the thought process then the skills, it's about how you step away from it, where as live it's about tackling the situation and the vibe of the room etc..

Anyway props on the mix though mate, i was just worried i'd come across as being a bit sh*tty, it does sound like an on the fly mix, and i mean that in a good way, lots of energy and a lovely live feel about it, couple of little drifts and stuff in there but that just adds to the live feel of it so it's all good. I know a lot of people who would love this so i'll be passing it on, and it's in the car and will be for most of the summer.

Just a little (approx. 40 min) practice session I ressed the record button on today...Complete with a couple USB drop-outs at the beginning.I even left the fader open once or twice for your listening pleasure. Nothing special, just Rel mode on the fly(and the sampler, which I probably over at times). Some new Babu beats, and a bunch of Dilla shit, A.G., M.O.P., M.E.D., Dilated, Frank N Dank....and others. Wow..It's a lot worse Than I remembered. It is off beat a few times(NYG;s to Evidence transition is teriible.What the ^%$# was I thinking?), and the cuts are sloppy as hell. But there is some dope material on there. So take a listen...
